Computers and the software that runs inside them become much more advanced with every year. When I first started
programming at age 5, I could only write simple programs on a computer with 16K of RAM and a limited instruction
set. Now, I have the ability to send e-mails, run industrial machinery, and simulate the effects of physics on
thousands of elements of a system, with off the shelf hardware and software. This is truly an amazing time in history.
Compared to writing a letter and waiting for the recipient to receive it, running machines with a human operator, and writing out differential equations by hand, the amount of money a business can save by using a computer can be measured in the thousands of dollars. Multiply this savings by many workers, and computers and their software pay for themselves very quickly. In fact, I make use of at least ten capabilities of a computer to save myself
time every day, from doing research on the internet, to online banking, and communicating via email.
Unfortunately, if you have used a computer for any length of time, you have probably been overwhelmed and frustrated
over "nuisances" that pop up during your day. Maybe the server went down, or maybe the controller for
your machine locked up and caused a manufactured part to be scrapped. You feel bad about your investment in technology.
How can you solve these problems?
There are several quick ways to fix problems that go wrong, or to "comply" with corporate standards. If you have a need for configuration management of your simulation models, you could just check them in to WinRCS and say that you use revision control. However, that may not be the best solution, especially if you do that just to
make your superiors happy. Other people are probably using better solutions to ensure a quality product.
My name is Robert Thoelen, III, and I've helped several large companies with their software engineering and software testing challenges. I've also developed some economical solutions for small companies and home office users. I take a "systems" approach to software, getting involved in
making many software and hardware products work together to solve specific engineering and business problems. In a single week, I might administrate a Linux system, write test scripts for PAT, DVT, or Verification testing, develop some LabVIEW and TestStand solution, and then perform maintainance on my company's Small Business Server 2003. All these things and more are considered a day's work for me. Solving problems and creating innovative programs are
what keeps me busy, sometimes late into the night. I'd love to speak with you about how I can help in your situation.
